Holiday
Music for Brass Choir
Instrumentation for all brass choir arrangements, except as
noted, calls for 4 trumpets, 4 horns, 2 tenor trombones, bass
trombone, and tuba. Trumpet parts sometimes call for flugelhorns
or piccolo trumpets. When percussion is required, all parts
can be covered by one percussionist. Some of these are also
available in British Brass Band or Double Brass Quintet versions.
|
Canzone
d'i Zampognari

Handel lifted this Sicilian lullaby, Carol of the Bagpipers,
for a bucolic moment in his Messiah, so the tune will be familiar
to nearly everyone, even though it is rarely sung these days.
This is a peaceful rendition emphasizing the melody Handel fell
in love with and hinting at the drone of bagpipes, with a smattering
of chimes for dignity.

$35.00 |
Christmas
Morning

An original work for brass choir and vibraphone by William
Berry, this piece starts with a hopeful, introspective painting
of winter dawn and gives way to an ever-building dance of
joy for the day to come. Two trumpet parts and two flugelhorn
parts. Somewhat difficult because of the mixed meters and
long trumpet lines. |
$35.00 |
Do
You Hear What I Hear?

A thoughtful and extended version of this popular tune which
uses the full range of colors available to brass choir, from
low and dark horns to searing fanfares. Two of the trumpeters
switch from C trumpets to piccolos; snare drum adds haunting
tension in the brooding moments and drive to the blazing conclusion. |
$35.00 |
God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

prophecy and less peaceful and relaxed than you may have heard
this tune before. Also available for Double Quintet. |
$35.00 |
A
Partridge in a Pear Tree

The Twelve Days of Christmas, more or less, but who’s
counting? A wild ride through the Christmas season leaves this
often tedious counting song in its dust and challenges the audience
to keep count of their epiphanies. Many subtle and not-so-subtle
seasonal and numerological musical references pepper this quodlibet,
from Jingle Bells and Auld Lang Syne to Prokofiev’s Lt.
Kije and Beethoven’s Ninth. The reviewer at the premiere
performance said: “Such a pile-up may be a record in the
annals of musical collisions.” Piccolo trumpet and percussion
required, only moderately difficult. |
$35.00 |
Patapan

Reserved Renaissance writing for piccolo trumpets and tabor
gives way to white-knuckle-fast mixed meter. The audience members
have to pick themselves up off the floor and fix their hair
after this one. Also available for Double Quintet. |

Tomorrow
Shall Be My Dancing Day
If you have heard this lesser-known carol from Cornwall, it
was probably in a version close to the tune’s folk roots.
Well, forget that. This setting is a bi-tonal, multi-meter,
screamingly fast mind dance. Multiple audience members will
say this tune was their favorite on their way out the door.
Recommended percussion on this is tabla drum or dumbek. |
$35.00 |
We
Three Kings - Traveling Music

Big band jazz waltz with some fun quotes and plenty of opportunity
for jazz solos. Powerful horn lines are the centerpiece of the
chart, and bongos lend it a cool camel-riding feel to start
and end it. |

While
By My Sheep

antiphonally. The 12 players split into 3 quartets for a glorious
Gabrieli style surround-sound hammerfest. No percussion. |
$35.00 |
Holiday
Music for Brass with Singers |
Most
of the vocal solo parts were written for soprano, but many
could be made to work for other voice types. Much of the choir
stuff is for children's chorus, but there is a fair amount
for mixed chorus as well. I write the accompaniments more
sparsely for the singers, using fewer players or writing lightly
for the full brass choir, and sometimes including other instruments.
Since the singers get to use words, I have found some more
unusual holiday selections to present, and have had excellent
success programming some things which aren't generally known.
Here is a brief listing of the arrangements which have worked
well: |
Solo
Voice with Brass |
Carol
of the Birds
Catalonian carol with lots of fluttering in the brass and soaring
in the vocals. Four trumpets and four horns constitute the accompaniment.
|
$35.00 |
The
Cherry Tree
Appalachian carol with a telling of a parable of Mary and Joseph.
Intense and artful story-telling setting with prominent tuba
feature throughout as the voice of Joseph. Piano and brass quartet
accompany the soloist. |
$35.00 |
El
Desembre Congelat (Icy December)
A short and sparkling Catalonian carol in a fairly classic style.
Brass quartet accompanies the singer. |
$35.00 |
Go
Tell It on the Mountain
Gospel setting of this spiritual, with some sweet moments and
some screaming moments for the full brass. Similar to the treble
chorus version, but set for baritone soloist. |
$35.00 |
The
Holly and the Ivy
English carol in a warm and flowing setting. Piano accompaniment
only. |
$35.00 |
Jesus
Christ the Apple Tree
Powerful early tune from New England. Pairs trumpet solo feature
with solo voice. Full brass choir accompaniment with piano. |
$35.00 |
Rise
Up, Shepherd, and Follow
Art song setting of this spiritual. Very contemplative, pretty,
and powerful. Full brass choir accompaniment. |
$35.00 |
Ríu
Ríu Chíu
The Spanish Renaissance meets metallica in this powerful version
of an old carol set for baritone, full brass choir, and percussion.
At our performance we were hoping for a fog machine and rock
stage lighting, but the sounds might have overpowered the visuals
anyway. Percussion required. |
$35.00 |
The
Zither Carol
A trumpet quartet with 2 piccolos and 2 Cs sets the coloratura
soprano part in motion in a sparkling, traditional setting of
this carol. High soprano part, as well as some high notes for
some of the trumpet players, making it moderately difficult. |
$35.00 |
Mixed
Choir with Brass |
|
Songs of Peace
Four-movement, 25-minute work for treble chorus, SATB chorus and orchestra. The text for this music was assembled by William Berry from poetry, images, and concepts written and contributed by the young singers participating in the performance. [Click here for texts] The movements are unified by thematic material for flow, but could be performed separately.
|
$500.00 |
Angels
An original cantata for mixed choir, treble choir, brass, percussion,
and organ. The texts reflect the universality of angels in all
cultures and religions. The seven movements musically explore
connections with another world, ranging from haunting to powerful,
dark to jubillant, disturbing to comforting:
The cantata
is built around a handful of themes which recur in a variety
of forms in the seven movements. The music is tonally ambiguous
and musically challenging, but written for a current audience
and well-received in performance. The brass choir consists of
4 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, and tuba; two percussionists
are needed to cover timpani, glockenspiel, snare, etc.; the
treble choir is mostly two-part writing, occasionally splitting
to four parts; the mixed choir is four-part SATB with occasional
splits within the parts and more challenging than the treble
chorus writing. Performance time is approximately 36 minutes.
Price includes 20 treble chorus scores and 20 mixed chorus scores;
additional vocal scores are $4 each. The 10% discount for purchases
over $100 does not apply to this piece, since it has already
been factored into the price. |
$395.00 |
Hush,
My Babe, Lie Still and Slumber
Mixed choir SATB version. Treble chorus version also available.
A beautiful a capella setting of an Appalachian lullaby carol
with text-painting and rich chords. Includes 20 scores; additional
scores $1 each. |

American
Carols
Thirteen lesser-known 19th century American songs in modern
settings for treble chorus and orchestra. These wonderful
tunes are culled from shape-note, African-American and white
gospel, and folk melodies. They are set in a traditional and
familiar style in order to highlight the sturdy nature of
the songs but with enough depth to bear repeated performances
and hearings. The entire work is unified to flow with the
story and would make a strong half of a concert, but the movements
could also be performed separately. This 47-minute work was
commissioned for a children's chorus and youth orchestra,
so while it presents moderate challenges for younger musicians,
it would not be difficult to present with professionals.
A CD is available.
Music
available includes full size conductor score, smaller study
score, choral scores with piano reduction, and complete instrumental
parts for the complete work or individual movements.

Lo,
How a Rose
An unusual but riveting setting we did on our cathedral concert.

the right place to pull it off, but very effective. |

Music for Solo Trumpet with Brass Choir
A five-movement, 15-minute concerto for B-flat trumpet with
brass and percussion, commissioned for and premiered by Allen
Vizzutti in March of 2004. The music reflects the rhythms
and energy of cycling in a variety of ways. The ensemble parts
are not particularly difficult, but the solo part is quite
challenging, requiring technical facility and range up to
the G above high C. A thrilling piece to perform and hear,
and a stunning feature for an accomplished soloist.

Quartet
for Natural Horns
Three movements: Processional, Gospel, and Chasing Game. Each
movement contains canons and uses a different tonal center within
the limited compass of the natural horn. The Processional is
bitonal, with the flat seventh as one tonic, Gospel is a drop-dead
gorgeous tune centered on the fifth, and Chasing Game is the
ultimate romp for hunting horns with the usual tonic. |
$35.00 |
Suite
for Endangered Instruments
This sextet for low brass was originally commissioned for ophicleides,
sarusaphones, double-belled euphoniums, and serpent, but can
be just as much fun on trombones, tubas, and other modern brass.
All parts printed in bass clef and B-flat treble clef. As an
anachronistic dance suite, each of the six movements is an out-of-favor
dance form alliteratively named after a dustbin device:
- Gaslight
Gavotte
- Milk
Bottle Minuet
- Typewriter
Tango
- Slide

- Buggie

Brass Bands, Music for Brass |
River
of the Spokanes by William Berry
I. Bowl & Pitcher
II. Antoine Plante Ferry
III. Spokane Falls
Commissioned by the Spokane British Brass Band for their
tenth anniversary.
The Spokane River
and the falls are the reason the city of Spokane is here.
Long before our current culture developed the area, the Spokane
tribe populated the falls; it was the farthest upstream the
salmon could swim. These three movements for traditional brass
band instrumentation, with two percussionists, honor three
moods of the river. The first portrays rippling eddies, a
bit of whitewater, and the river cutting through the rocks.
Plante Ferry is a quiet bend in the river, where crossing
is possible, and this movement is a placid and peaceful song.
Spokane Falls is a quick, shimmering, and playful movement
culminating in a blazingly powerful fanfare. The three movement
last about 13 minutes, and were intended as an aspirational
challenge for the traditional amateur band structure in the
form of a contest piece which would show off every instrument
and the full ensemble's abilities. Recording not yet available.

Manito
Sketches by William Berry
Woodwind Nonet: Flute, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Horns, 2 Bassoons
I. Morning
Meditation in the Japanese Garden
II. The Park Bench - Lovers'
Tango
III. Rose Hill Rag - A
Tea Social
IV. Children
at Play Around the Fountain
V. Concert
Under the Stars in Duncan Garden
This music
began as a request for a possible "Manito Rag" to
honor the 100th anniversary of Manito Park in Spokane. While
some of the music sets out to honor historic forms, in honor
of the hundred years past, all five movements are intended
to be timeless as a tribute to the present and future of the
park and outdoor concerts. Each movement represents a different
location in Manito Park and describes a different mood, time,
and light. There are many ways to listen to this music: certainly
taking each movement individually in stride is an option,
however it is possible to conceive the collection as a century-long
day in Manito Park not chronologically with the passing of
the century, but more in the sense of a day in which each
of the events is timeless.
Morning Meditation in the Japanese Garden
The flute begins by evoking the sound of a shakuhachi and,
as they make their entrances, each of the instruments sound
atmospheric rather than precise. The musical form is misty
and condensed, somewhat reminiscent of a sonic haiku. It may
rain lightly during the course of the performance. The first
notes sounded are the unifying theme on which all of the movements
are based.
The
Park Bench --- Lovers' Tango
Many things happen in a park. On a hot, steamy late morning,
she arrives first; looks around; hesitates a moment; rises
to leave but stops at a small distance to wait, just in case.
He arrives. She musters the courage to walk by the bench,
making every effort to appear as if this moment has not been
planned. She glances at him. He speaks. She replies. He stands.
She sits. He sits again, close to her. Together, they . .
. ah, well, but it's all in the music.
Rose
Hill Rag --- A Tea Social
This modernized bit of classic ragtime describes an early
afternoon society event in the rose garden with all of the
right people who are there to see and be seen. The music includes
the clattering of plates and flatware, the nonsensical mingling
of snippets from many disjointed conversations and, of course,
laughter.
Children
at Play Around the Fountain
Away from the direct supervision of adults, but within a comforting
calling distance, small children enjoy the past-bedtime, semi-illicit
freedom of being outdoors on a late summer evening as night
begins to fall and the stars come out. The youngsters' extemporaneous
laughter and play enchants the formal garden, as if woodland
sprites are emerging under the cover of creeping darkness
to reclaim their magical site.
Concert
Under the Stars in Duncan Garden
A mirror on the current event, this movement represents the
past and future of real music connecting the world. This music
captures the magical moment when the outdoors is tamed and
sophisticated and all of the lurking fears of the wild mind
and jungle are held at bay by the mere whim of culture.
